Protect Only Certain Cells, Rows or Columns in Excel

Earlier today I wrote about how to protect and unprotect excel sheets with password. I know that sometimes you want to only protect certain cells, rows or columns from your friends in excel 2007, 2010 or 2013. By doing so, your friends would not be able to edit or modify the cells, rows or columns you have protected as these will be read-only for them while they would be able to edit the information in rest of the sheet.

So here will we tell you how to protect only certain cells, rows or columns in excel 2007, excel 2010 or excel 2013. Though you can protect the whole sheet in excel but by doing so all the cells will be locked so if you want to protect only few cells, then you need to follow the steps shown in this post.

How to Protect Only Certain Cells, Rows or Columns in Excel

We assume that you are editing excel sheet which is already protected and here we will tell you how to protect only few cells in it. So open the protect excel sheet.

Press “Ctrl + A” button to select all the cells of the sheet. Now right click and then select “format cells” option. Click on “protection” tab and there uncheck the “locked” option. Click on OK.

Now you have unprotected all the cells. Next select the cells, rows or columns which you want to protect and then right click and again click on “format cells” option there. Go to “protection” tab and check the locked option. Click on OK.

In this way you can only protect few rows or columns in excel 2007 or excel 2010 or excel 2013 with password. In order to unprotect, simple select the locked cells and uncheck the locked option.
